ART AS LANGUAGE
The artist Mona Schulzek perceives of art as a universal and cosmic language, which may also be understood by extraterrestrial forms of life. She believes that the abilities of every intelligent lifeform to reflect and abstract are expressed through art. In this sense, the messages of the »Outer Space Transmitter« can be interpreted as artefacts of a creative species, where the language of art is key to the communication with extraterrestrial forms of life.
FROM TEXT TO ELECTROMAGNETIC ART
The artist Mona Schulzek interprets the content of each message visually and creates a particular text image from it. The image is then translated into a extraterrestrial alphabet, created by the artist. In this way, the personal messages are converted into a multitude of individual art images – based on the text and expressed through the language of art.
The art images are sent into space as radio wave signals by Mona Schulzek – who is also a trained radio operator – via the antenna of the »Outer Space Transmitter«. Since radio waves have an endless life span, the art images become electromagnetic messages for eternity when sent into space – maybe to be found by extraterrestrials.
